Overview of Written Exam

Exam Date:

TUESDAY, MAY 7, 2024

The purpose of the Board is to evaluate the education, training, and knowledge of broadly competent and responsible plastic surgeons.

The Written Examination is a Computer Based Test (CBT) offered at Prometric Test Centers in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico.

The Written Examination is administered on one day. No exceptions will be made, and special examinations will be given only under unusual circumstances. The Board cannot guarantee scheduling for specific test centers.

  • 15-minute optional tutorial
  • The exam is formatted in 3 blocks of 100 questions - All questions are multiple choice*
  • Total break time of 60 minutes (optional)
  • Total appointment time is approximately 6 hours
  • Optional survey upon completion - the survey does not interfere with the time allotted to complete the exam

*The 2024 Written Examination will be comprised of 250 scored items and 50 unscored items. The 50 unscored items will not be identifiable to the candidate. The pretesting of unscored items allows the Board to analyze the statistical properties prior to those items being placed on an examination and included in scoring.

All candidates will have the same number of items and the same time allotment to take the examination. Within each block, candidates may answer items in any order and review and/or change their answers. When exiting a block, or when time expires, no further review of items or changing of answers within that block is possible.

Candidates will have 60 minutes of total break time. A break may only be taken between each block of questions.
